Accra, Ghana – As Ghana prepares to host the prestigious 13th African Games, a cloud of controversy hangs over the event due to alleged exorbitant spending by the government. Leaked documents have ignited public outrage, raising questions about financial transparency, legality, and potential conflicts of interest.

The crux of the issue lies in a reportedly planned allocation of a staggering US$48 million (approximately GHS602 million) for “operational expenses” associated with the games. This figure comes on top of the already allocated US$195 million (approximately GHS2.4 billion) for infrastructure development, raising concerns about the overall cost burden on a nation already facing economic difficulties.

Critics, including several top executives who reportedly received funding requests, have expressed outrage at the sheer size of the “operational expenses” budget and the lack of transparency surrounding its breakdown. They question the necessity and potential misuse of such a significant amount, particularly in light of Ghana’s current economic struggles.

Furthermore, the legality of the proposed spending has come under scrutiny. Leaked documents allegedly reveal that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo authorized the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) to request US$48 million, despite Parliament having previously approved only GHS150 million (approximately US$23 million) for the entire Games budget. This alleged bypassing of parliamentary approval is seen by many as a blatant disregard for the democratic process and fiscal responsibility.

Adding fuel to the fire, the leaked documents also suggest the potential for undue influence in the fundraising process. The documents reportedly show that President Akufo-Addo may have targeted specific companies, including state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and private firms with a history of benefiting from government contracts, for fundraising purposes. This raises serious ethical concerns about potential favoritism and an unfair playing field for other businesses.

President Akufo-Addo has yet to publicly address the allegations, leaving the public and media to grapple with the leaked information. With the Games just weeks away, these financial concerns threaten to overshadow the international event and further erode public trust in the government.

The situation has sparked passionate discussions across Ghana, with many citizens expressing frustration and demanding transparency and accountability from their leaders. The government faces a critical juncture, needing to address the public’s concerns and ensure responsible financial management, particularly in light of the nation’s economic challenges. Only time will tell how this controversy unfolds and what impact it will have on the 13th African Games and beyond.
